Chappell Roan: Pop Music’s Saviour

In the last few years, the pop music scene has been dominated by Taylor Swift’s constant releases and re-releases, TikTok one hit wonders and Disney Channel starlets. To me, everything got very ‘samey’. Whilst I enjoy Taylor, Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter’s recent hit ‘Espresso’, they all pale in comparison to the genres saviour Chappell Roan.

Chappell Roan is an overnight sensation ten years in the making. She began uploading covers and original music to YouTube and was signed by Atlantic Records in 2015. After releasing one EP she was dropped from the label and had to return from LA to Missouri to start again. This did not deter her as she released her debut album ‘The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess’ in 2023 and has gone to take over TikTok, Coachella, America and I pray the world.

She is a queer artist, her onstage style is inspired by drag queen aesthetics and her songs are ballads and anthems for queer relationships. Her most recent release ‘Good Luck, Babe’ has become the song of the summer already taking the algorithm by storm.

She is a breath of fresh air and mass of red, curly hair in a heavily saturated market. I thought Dua Lipa was going to be pop’s saviour after “Future Nostalgia” but going by her recent album, this is definitely not the case. She’s a global superstar and her music still sounds completely generic to every pop entry on Spotify.

Chappell flips the idea of a pop superstar, she wears drag makeup, white makeup, eccentric, over the top costumes and serves ‘c*nt’ at each show. Her audience are intoxicated by her performances that even include dance routines (shout out Hot To Go!). This is what we need in 2024, we need stage performers and someone who dares to step outside the box.  Chappell supported Olivia Rodrigo on the Guts world tour, an incredible feat, I love Olivia but Chappell has an edge that will make her a true legend.

In a world where you can be anything, be more Chappell Roan because she is an icon and soon to be global megastar.
