My favourite things to do in Liverpool, so far

When you think of Liverpool you may imagine The Beatles, Cilla Black or Liverpool Football Club. These are just three of the icons from the city and definitely things I should be exploring more as a touristy resident. Maybe not LFC, I don’t think I’d be able to go back to Derrynoose and all its Manchester United supporters.

With all the amazing things to do in Liverpool, it’s difficult to shortlist the experiences into 5 points. But I’ve given it a go and want to share with you my 5 favourite things to do (so far) in Merseyside.

  1. Visit the magnificent Albert Dock

Albert Dock is undoubtedly my favourite place in Liverpool. It is a glorious area with gorgeous scenes of the water, iconic buildings and enough shops, cafes and restaurants that you could easily spend your afternoon there. It is home to some delicious restaurants. I’ve eaten in Panam, Smuggler’s Cove and What’s Cooking. I would recommend these all for lunch and evening meals. Plus, Ruben’s café has the most delicious caramel slices and coffee that are perfect for walking around the docks, if you’re very careful not to get attacked by the seagulls.

2. Spend a Saturday, Sunday, or any day at Baltic Market

I’m not sure whether it’s the best thing in the world, or the most dangerous, that the Baltic Market is on my doorstep. It’s just the perfect day or evening out. The atmosphere is always buzzing from all the independent food stalls to the fantastic musical acts they have. Ukebox was the first band I saw there on a Saturday night when I didn’t want to go into town but still wanted to go out.

Well, what an experience, hearing mashups of the Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears and Katy Perry from the ukulele and kazoo, where would you get the likes of it? The entire area around Cain’s Brewery transmits ultimate “festival vibes” and at the weekend the best part of sitting drinking craft beers is the people watching. From stags, hens, and giant groups - the activity is always electric.

3. Visit Sefton Park and Lark Lane

Lark Lane is the home of independents from restaurants to clothing stores. One store in particular The Retro Room has some fantastic retro/vintage items. I’ve picked up some funky accessories on visits but you can only wear so many rings on your fingers. Leading from Lark Lane is Sefton Park which seems to be home to every adorable dog in Liverpool. Here there is a stunning lake and walking path where you could easily spend your afternoon (weather permitting).

4. Liverpool One Shopping

Of course, my list of favourite things to do wouldn’t be mine if it didn’t focus on the shops Liverpool has to offer. I’ve never seen anything like it. River Island in Northern Ireland doesn’t have a patch on what’s here in the city centre. The store itself is stunning, I could easily live there. Plus there is an entire floor dedicated to shoes, bags and accessories. The dream.

Whilst the high street stores are fantastic, it is extremely enjoyable walking around the new Flannels and Tessuti stores. It’s important to note, one beautiful Alexander McQueen red dress costs around the average monthly salary, so don’t get too comfortable there.

5. Saturday Night Lights

Finally, the city is famous for its nightlife. And what a night you can have. I haven’t found any pretentious places in the city centre yet. All just good craic with lots of dancing, singing and if you feel like a taste of home, there are plenty of Irish bars for you to enjoy. Arguably the best part of the night out is all the food options available for the real “after-party”. I will say it is dangerous to have a McDonald’s within walking distance, but I do enjoy living life on the wild side.

So, there you have it. My 5 favourite things to do in Liverpool, so far. If you are considering a trip to the city I would recommend visiting the World Museum, St. George’s Hall or booking tickets for a show at the Empire Theatre. Plus, I’ve heard that the city transforms for Christmas with an ice skating rink and multiple continental markets. There are so many things on my Liverpool bucket list that still need to be done. But I’ve got plenty of time for that.
