Netflix Review: The Broken Heart Gallery
The Broken Hearts Gallery is a 2020 film recently added to Netflix. It’s a positive film that requires very little thinking yet provides a charming time.
The premise
Lead actor Geraldine Viswanathan plays Lucy, a quirky and passionate twenty-something who has an endless string of broken relationships. From each of these relationships, Lucy keeps a piece of memorabilia as they celebrate moments from the past Her dream is to open a gallery of her own one day yet she is sacked from her job as a gallery assistant. Do you see where this is going?
Stranger Things fans will be delighted that Viswanathan is joined by Billy Hargrove AKA Darce Montgomery as the film’s heartthrob. Monthomery’s character Nick has some chance encounters with Lucy and she ends up using space from his work in progress hotel, ‘The Chloe’, to house her gallery. This is a hugely different role for Darce but together the actors have a kinetic onscreen chemistry with supporting roles from Philipa Soo (Hamilton) and Suki Waterhouse (Love, Rosie).
The gallery’s exhibitions
Lucy’s broken heart gallery doesn’t house works of great literature, priceless statues or artefacts, it holds memorabilia from strangers’ previous relationships. Monetarily worthless items that people have held on to remember a certain time or person in their lives. By hoarding these items the individuals are seen as clinging to the past but by donating them for public show the feeling is cathartic, allowing them to move on.
108 minutes of bliss
We find out that Lucy’s mum has lost her memory, hence why she clung to these items. So she wouldn’t forget. It’s a positive and charming film that doesn’t touch heavily on negativity or ‘bad vibes’ which is a welcome addition to Netflix which seems to get darker everyday.
I’d give the movie 4 stars ⭐️
