Tiktok needs to calm the hell down

It all started when I searched for beginner reformer Pilate moves ahead of a class I booked. It was a rookie mistake because now body transformations and diet culture are bombarding my FYP. I think the most offensive ad I’ve received this week is for a plastic surgeon in Turkey promising me a “mummy makeover” at affordable prices. The bleached blonde model nearly convinced me. Six pack implant? What could possibly go wrong?

It’s a toxic place. Video after video highlights the need and obsession of internet culture to become the smallest version of yourself. I don’t mind watching videos of people training and becoming stronger, now that’s impressive and inspiring. But this is a totally different thing.

There is such a difference in looking after yourself and eating a balanced diet to then making it consume your life to be your personality trait. Internet culture is the worst - body positivity has been eradicated and replaced with balayage wielding matcha drinkers showing “how I’ve gone from that to this”.

The internet is obsessed with looks. I unintentionally had an extensive social media break over the summer and it was the best thing to happen. Whatever TikTok videos I did see were comedy bits, TV show clips and red carpet fashion critics. Now my algorithm is teaching me to reduce my size to be truly happy.

My advice? Get off your phone and into the real world. There is so many more important things happening in the world that don’t require gym recordings or what you eat in a day. Because genuinely, who gives a damn?
