Film Review: Mothers’ Instinct (2024)

Mothers’ Instinct is lead by Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain, proving that Mothers do know best. This film wasn’t received positively by critics but I loved it.

The plot follows Celine (Hathaway) and Alice (Chastain), two stunning, loved up housewives typical to “Don’t Worry Darling” or “Stepford Wives”. They idolise their 8 year old sons who are also best friends until one day, an unthinkable tragedy takes place that shifts the friendship dynamics.

After a death, Celine and Alice begin games of psychological warfare. There are feelings of guilt and blame floating around that leads the women to bizarre behaviour making you doubt which one is actually crazy. It is the little acts of deception that offer the bigger punches including missing tablet boxes and a Bunny toy.

Yet things definitely take a turn in the last third of the movie. Chloroform, leather gloves and broken pearl necklaces litter the glossy halls of these immaculate houses. I thought the movie was going to take a different direction especially in the light of Alice’s husband threatening to get her committed (again).

The final scene didn’t leave me as much shocked but more questioning the police department in this fictional world for not looking into these extensive death tolls.

If you like glamorous and talented stars and a thriller-esque movie, Mothers’ Instinct is definitely maybe one to add to your Sunday evening movie list. 7/10 from me.
