Film Review: The Weekend Away (2022)
After the disappointment of watching A Family Affair on my Saturday night I opted for The Weekend Away to redeem myself with my family. Unfortunately, I’m still awaiting my redemption. I had seen the trailer to this movie last year and thought it looked intriguing. I also love Leighton Meester and wanted to see her in a more serious, dramatic movie. However, I’m still waiting to do so, as what The Weekend Away lacked in drama it made up in predictability.
The story follows friends Beth and Kate on a weekend trip in Croatia. Beth is a new mum having some marital problems and Kate is celebrating going through a divorce. Their night out escalates quickly and Beth wakes up alone, confused and searching for answers. After a whole lot of running around Croatia with the taximan, evading the police and making dubious decisions, we get our answers.
As we suspected from ten minutes in, the husband did it. He was having an affair with Kate and of course, he murdered her too, but it was an accident so shouldn’t Beth forgive him? At many times it is referenced how Croatia is only “two hours away” from London on a flight, so much so in the final scenes, it became almost like a tourism campaign.
However the movie tells us exactly what not to do whenever you’re in a country alone and struggling to find answers. Let’s break them down below:
Do not befriend a taxi driver you have never met and run around Croatia looking for answers.
Do not act shifty when your husband arrives in Croatia and sees you and said taxi man laughing and heading for food to discuss your sleuthing ways.
Do NOT stay in the basement room of your creepy Air B&B landlord. This was a major blip with all family members shouting at the TV.
As the “drama” unfolded, all of our questions were answered, and neatly tied with a bow in the most anti-climatic ending of a film.
