music: the popstars daring to be different

Grammy-nominated Chappell Roan has won BBC’s Sound of 2025. This prestigious award could not go to anyone more deserving. She literally was my sound of 2024, songs like ‘Good Luck, Babe’ and “Pink Pony Club” broke records culminating in iconic performances including the MTV Awards, Lollapalooza and Saturday Night Live. The Americans could not believe that the SNL audience actually sang along and interacted with her during the show - how could you not?

Your favourite artist’s favourite artist

She is an absolute superstar but does not go without controversy. Chappell’s recent interview with Jack Saunders has gone viral as she made a comment about how she would be more famous if she “wore a muzzle”. Public opinion has been harsh on Chappell over this last year. Since her global superstardom the star has been very vocal about “creepy fan behaviour”, stalking, and inappropriate interactions with the star. Some “fans” have shown up at her parents home, called her by her birth name “Kayleigh” and ambush her for photos in the street. Public opinion has been harsh with a lot of comments referencing the notion, “This goes with the territory of fame” but why should it?

Chappell does not conform to the pop princess stereotype. Her on-stage style is heavily influenced by drag queens complete with camp makeup looks and iconic outfits including the chainmail costume at the MTV Awards, her outfit on SNL and that wrestling outfit.

I feel that new pop music is homogenous and cookie cutter. Originality has taken a backseat and I am so done with the sad girl pop we’ve been subjected to this last few years. Chappell Roan is leading the way with crowd pleasing anthems that need to be seen and experienced live. I am so excited for what is to come with Chappell’s sound and music offering. And whilst we wait for new music, I will listen to “Casual” and “Good Luck, Babe” for the millionth time.

Doechii supreme, the Swamp Ruler

Another star who is nominated for a Grammy is Florida born rapper Doechii and I don’t even think I’m cool enough to listen to her music but I literally am obsessed with her. Like Chappell, people think she is an overnight sensation but that is not the case. Both artists have been grafting for years to reach this level of exposure and superstardom. Their originality sets them apart from other stars today, sheer talent (rather than nepotism, industry plants and social media) has made them household names.

They both deserve their Best New Artist nomination. Doechii’s performances on the Tiny Desk Concert showcases her uniqueness and musicality. That concert was a masterclass in style, music and performance. Her band are equal stars in the Doechii world. Plus, her clothes. Oh her clothes. Doechii’s style is chic and cool - her fit on the Stephen Colbert show is something I strive to wear at least once in my lifetime.

I’m excited for the Grammy Awards in February to see who takes home the trophy but whether they win or lose, Chappell and Doechii are on to a winner. They’re making music interesting again, their authenticity is exactly what we need.
